Certamen Preliminaries will be held at the Convention year of 2011!

For Previous Year 2010:
We are pleased to announce two changes to the certamen preliminary rounds for the 2009-2010 year. In brief, all preliminary certamen rounds will be held prior to the convention (only the final round for each level will he held during the convention itself), and qualification will be determined on a regional basis rather than on the basis of one preliminary grouping.

For the purposes of certamen preliminary rounds, the WA/BC JCL chapters will be divided into three regions (North, Central/South, and East). For each certamen level, one team from each region will qualify for the finals (by winning that region's preliminary rounds for their level).

A fuller description of the qualification procedures is given below.

Decisions regarding the division into regions has been done in an effort to ensure a competitive and numerical balance in each region while adhering to geographical reality as much as possible. We anticipate holding the East and Central/South regionals at the same time and place (in the greater Seattle area), and holding the North regionals (at a more northern location as yet to be determined) either a week before or after the other two regions' date. For this reason it has been possible to distribute the East and Central/South teams a bit more freely than might be expected.

Although the same sets of questions can be used for both Central/South and East region preliminaries (as they will be held simultaneously), we will will not be able to use the same questions for the North preliminaries. For this reason, special care will be taken to ensure that the sets of questions used for each region's preliminary rounds are of similar difficulty and focus.

The Certamen rules remain unchanged from previous years- a chapter may still enter multiple teams on any or all levels.

A hypothetical example is given here:

in the NORTH region,
Chapter A enters 2 novice teams, 1 intermediate team and 1 upper team.
Chapter B enters 0 novice teams, 3 intermediate teams and 1 upper team.
Chapter C enters 1 novice team, 0 intermediate teams and 2 upper teams.
Chapter D enters 1 novice team, 1 intermediate team and 1 upper team.
Chapter E enters 0 novice teams, 0 intermediate teams and 1 upper team.

This region's Novice level consists of 4 teams. They play their three rounds, and the overall winner advances to the Novice certamen finals at the convention (to play the winners of the other 2 regions' novice level preliminary rounds).

This region's Intermediate level consists of 5 teams, who play their rounds to determine the region's champion.

This region's Upper level consists of 6 teams, who play their rounds to determine the region's champion.

We hope to have the rounds scheduled fairly early in the school year. Please let me know (as soon as you know!) if there are any weekends which will really REALLY not work for your chapter's students. Also, if you are interested in your school hosting either of the preliminary dates please contact me and we can discuss the event requirements.

It is our hope that these changes will make it somewhat easier for schools from farther away to participate in the preliminary rounds, and also give everyone at the convention more time to enjoy its various activities. Some assistance may be available to help defray travel and/or lodging expenses associated with these certamen preliminary rounds; please contact me if you would like to discuss this further. We want to make it possible for as many chapters as possible to attend the preliminary rounds!

Thank you for your support, and for all that you do for our WA/BC JCL!
