Graphic Arts Contest
Guidelines and Rules
PLEASE READE THE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY
FAILURE TO ADHERE TO ANY OR ALL OF THESE
RULES MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
All entries should be labeled according
to the instructions below:
1.
YOUR NAME SHOULD NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE
ON THE PROJECT.
2.
IT WILL BE REQUIRED THAT A 3x5inch
NOTECARD BEARING THE FOLLOWING
INFORMATION BE ATTACHED TO THE PROJECT:

a. TITLE/DESCRIPTION
b. THE DIVISION/MEDIUM IN WHICH THE
PROJECT IS BEING ENTERED (i.e. MOSAICS,
WATERCOLOR, ETC.)
c. THE GRADE IN WHICH THE ENTRANT IS
CURRENTLY ENROLLED
d. ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WHICH
MIGHT BE NEEDED FOR JUDGING (i.e. KIT
USED, SOURCE OF PICTURE, STORY, MAP,
ETC. AND ITEMS USED SUCH AS PATTERNS OR
PURCHASED PARTS.)

NOTA BENE (the following are all grounds
for disqualification):
• Only projects made by the delegates
present at the convention and properly
registered may be submitted in the
Graphic Arts Contests.
• The art must have a recognizable
classical theme.
• It is the entrant’s responsibility to
report the correct grade level and
division/medium.
• All projects must have been completed
before Graphic Arts registration on
convention day and since the final day
of the last state convention.
• Group projects will not be accepted.
• Delegates may enter as many pieces as
they wish, but ONLY ONE ENTRY PER
MEDIUM/DIVISION MAY BE SUBMITTED PER
PERSON (i.e. a delegate may enter one
watercolor, one oil/acrylic and one
colored ink per convention, but not
multiples of any medium/division such as
two watercolors or a doll and a piece of
jewelry as they fall into the same
division).
• This is not a computer contest;
computers may only be used in specified
categories, such as Computer Enhanced
Photography.
• Delegates will register their entries
based on their current grade. THE
FOLLOWING GRADE DIVISIONS WILL BE USED
IN JUDGING: GRADES 6-8 AND GRADES 9-12.
• Projects must be entered in the
correct division/medium.
• Projects will not be accepted for
judging after the designated Graphic
Arts registration time is over.
*The judges retain the right to move
projects to more appropriate categories
and to combine age groups in order to
allow for the most competitive and
therefore fairest judging. If you have
questions or concerns about the judging
please speak with the Graphic Arts Chair
at convention (please remember that they
are very busy) or speak with your
sponsor after convention.

PICTOR ANNI: Artist of the Year
A competition designed to encourage
great quantities of the highest quality
art!
A prize is given to the artist in each
age group who enters the most art that
also wins the most valuable ribbons. It
is an objective, point based system,
encouraging as many entries as possible,
as well as entries of the highest
caliber. The award is not a ribbon, but
a special prize.
ARS FABULOSA: Story art/ Themed Art
A competition designed to encourage
artists to think about new media and new
ideas as well as encourage new artists
to participate!
All art must adhere to and creatively
convey the assigned theme. A description
of the piece must be provided on the
attached 3x5 note card, including how it
is relevant to the assigned theme and
what media were used as well as any
other information relevant to judging.
There will be one winner per age group.
No computer generated material allowed.
The piece can be two dimensional or
three dimensional, but either way must
be on a firm mat board base. You may use
any materials, unless computer
generated. For example the piece can be
a watercolor, mixed media, a model, a
sculpture, etc. If the piece is three
dimensional it can be no larger than one
cubic foot in dimension; if the piece is
two dimensional it must be no smaller
than 8 ½ x 11 inches and no larger than
16 x 20 inches. The award is not a
ribbon, but a special prize.
THIS YEAR’S THEME:
Myths of Constellations (Fabulae
Siderum)
Think creatively, both in the subject
and the media used; the judges will take
this into account.
ARS ANNI: People’s Choice
A competition where the winner is a
piece voted the best by the convention
attendees.
Each piece is assigned a number and the
attendees vote on which piece is the
best, in their opinion, using the
assigned number. Whichever piece
receives the most votes during the
designated voting time, wins the
competition. Votes must be submitted
during the designated time and on the
supplied ballot or it will not count.
Pieces that were disqualified during
judging will not be eligible to
participate in this competition. There
will be only one winner out of all the
entries. The award is not a ribbon, but
a special prize.
Category: FINE ART
1.

done with a brush)

- Do not enter groups of pictures as
they cannot be judged fairly against
single pictures. - All entries must be backed with a
stiff mat board. - All entries must be two dimensional.
- Entries may be matted, but projects
with glass or frames of any kind will be
disqualified. - Pictures (excluding the mat) may have
a minimum size or 8 ½ x11inches and a
maximum size of 16x20inches. - Each piece of art must have a 3x5inch
card with a title/description of the
artwork, category and the entrant’s
current grade level, the source of, or
whether it is the original design of the
entrant, must also be indicated. - A student may enter ONE piece of
artwork in each of the 9 Art
Divisions/Media.

Category: HANDICRAFTS
1.
Mosaic
|
a. Should be made on a firm background-
not cardboard, unless paper tesserae are
used. No matter what type of tesserae,
THE ENTIRE SPACE SHOULD BE COVERED,
INCLUDING THE BACKGROUND AREA, but using
only one layer of the tesserae, do not
build up or overlap the tesserae.
Tesserae should be approximately the
same size and thickness to give a fairly
level finished product. They should be
individual, separately colored pieces
and firmly attached. Lines drawn to
place the tesserae should not show, and
there should be no lines painted on the
surface of the finished mosaic. Remember
that Roman mosaics were usually floor
surfaces and meant to be walked upon,
they were not just pretty pictures.

2.
Sculpture or Pottery
|
a. Should be handmade only -no molds.
Sculpture should be a figure of some
sort, either done in the round, or a
relief cut from flat surfaces. Pottery
should be a container of some sort
(vase, jar, urn, sarcophagus, etc.)

3.
Large Models
|
a. Must be larger than One Cubic Foot.
One cubic foot means that the model
should usually measure more than 12-15
inches in any dimension. When
appropriate a scale must be provided.
Models should be actual three
dimensional representations of objects,
not flat pictures. Larger models are
expected to be more accurate and
intricate in detail than smaller models.

4.
Small Models
|
a. Must be less than One Cubic Foot. One
cubic foot means that the model should
usually measure more than 12-15 inches
in any dimension. When appropriate a
scale must be provided. Models should be
actual three dimensional representations
of objects, not flat pictures.

5.
Decorative Stitching, Dolls, Jewelry
or Other Textiles
|
a. Entrants may choose to enter only one
of the four media in this division. b. No kits or patterns may be used
without major alterations and proper
citations. c. Workmanship, creativity and neatness
are essential aspects considered by the
judges. d. Dolls: i. Entries may be a single doll or a
group of dolls within a theme. Entrants
are encouraged to complete as much
stitching by hand as possible. The
description or story of the doll(s) must
be provided on the attached 3x5 note
card. e. Decorative Stitching: i. Embroidery, weaving and sewing are
included in this division. No textiles
should be in framed glass. Work should
be neat and uniform; flat, not puckered,
with even and uniform stitches and with
no knots or dark threads showing through
the back. In cross-stitch, all the
stitches should cross in the same
direction. An explanation of the piece
should be provided on the attached 3x5
note card. f. Jewelry: i. Should be handmade only. g. Other Textiles: i. Batiks, banners and t-shirts should
be entered in this category. No textiles
should be in framed glass. Work should
be neat and uniform; flat, not puckered,
with even and uniform stitches and with
no knots or dark threads showing through
the back. In cross-stitch, all the
stitches should cross in the same
direction. An explanation of the piece
should be provided on the attached 3x5
note card.

6.
Games or Miscellaneous
|
a. Games: i. Must be entirely original; any
copyright infringement is grounds for
disqualification. All writing must be
typewritten or handwritten very legibly
in ink. An explanation of the piece
should be provided on the attached 3x5
note card. b. Miscellaneous: i. Projects may not be entered in the
miscellaneous category simply to avoid
disqualification in another category.
Miscellaneous handicrafts are those
which do not fall into the above
categories (i.e. woodcarving, decoupage,
scratch art, etc.) - Each piece of art must have a 3x5inch
card with a title/description of the
artwork, category and the entrant’s
current grade level, the source of, or
whether it is the original design of the
entrant, must also be indicated.

*A student may enter ONE piece artwork
in each 6 Handicrafts Divisions/Media.
Category: GRAPHICS
1.
Posters and Illustrated Quotations
|
a. Posters: i. Must be 22x28inches. Posters must
sell an idea, motto, or a slogan in an
original and creative way. They must
show relevance to Latin, Greek, JCL or
the Classical past. Any Latin used must
have a correct translation provided on
the attached 3x5 note card. b. Illustrated Quotations: i. Must measure 22x28 inches. They
should illustrate a recognizable Latin
quotation from an original Latin source,
which must be cited and correctly
translated on an attached 3x5 note card.
The quotation itself must be
incorporated into the project.

2.
Charts and Maps
|
a. Charts: i. Must measure 22x28 inches. Depictions
of Hades and floor plans of buildings
are classified as charts. When
appropriate a scale must be provided.
Either Latin or English must be selected
for the labeling and stay consistent,
unless the entrant intends to use both
languages on every labeled item. b. Maps: i. Must measure 22x28 inches. Maps show
where. They may very in media and be
multi-dimensional. When appropriate a
scale must be provided. Either Latin or
English must be selected for the
labeling and stay consistent, unless the
entrant intends to use both languages on
every labeled item. Source(s) of maps
must be cited. - Each piece of art must have a 3x5inch
card with a title/description of the
artwork, category and the entrant’s
current grade level, the source of, or
whether it is the original design of the
entrant, must also be indicated.

in either of the Graphics
Divisions/Media.
Category: CARTOONS AND GREETING CARDS
These two types are grouped as one
division; meaning the entrant can submit
a cartoon or greeting card, but not
both.
1.
Cartoons:
|
a. May be a single frame or a strip with
a classical theme. The entry must be
original and no larger than 3x8 inches.
You must not use copyrighted material.
All entries must be backed with stiff
mat board. Humor and/or wit are taken
into account when judging. No modern
political cartoons. All Latin used must
have a correct translation provided on
the attached 3x5 note card.

2.
Greeting Cards:
|
a. Must be 5x7 inches. They may be
serious or humorous and written for any
occasion. They must be original with a
classical theme and use only Latin
words. Do not use copyrighted material.
Computer generated material on cards in
NOT allowed. A translation must be
included on the 3x5 note card, as well
as a source if required, and also an
explanation of any special techniques
used. - Each piece of art must have a 3x5inch
card with a title/description of the
artwork, category and the entrant’s
current grade level, the source of, or
whether it is the original design of the
entrant, must also be indicated.

in the Cartoon and Greeting Card
Category.
Category: PHOTOGRAPHY
1.
Traditional Photography
|
a. Entries may be black and white, sepia
or colored. Pictures may be no larger
than 8x10 inches and on a hard mat back.
The photo may be matted but may not be
framed. Photos taken with a digital
camera may be submitted in this
category, but cannot have any
modifications beyond what you could do
with a traditional photo (e.g. no
red-eye correction). The photo must
depict a classical theme or portray a
classical scene. Creativity, originality
of subject matter and perspective will
be taken into account when judging. The
date and location of the photo must be
provided on the attached 3x5 note card.
Photo must be printed on photo weight
paper.

2.
Computer Enhanced Photography
|
a. Pictures may be no larger than 8x10
inches and on a hard mat back. The photo
may be matted but may not be framed.
Photos can be manipulated on the
computer, but all changes should be
documented and provided on a typed sheet
attached to the back of the photo. The
photo must depict a classical theme or
portray a classical scene. Creativity,
originality of subject matter and
perspective will be taken into account
when judging. Photo must be printed on
photo weight paper. - Each piece of art must have a 3x5inch
card with a title/description of the
artwork, category and the entrant’s
current grade level, the source of, or
whether it is the original design of the
entrant, must also be indicated.

Divisions/Media.
Category: AUDIO/VISUAL
1.
Audio/Visual:
|
a. The project must have been completed
between the end of the previous WA/BC
JCL Convention and the beginning of the
current convention. The tape must have
been prepared only by the student(s)
submitting it for judging. The tape must
be in VHS format. The maximum length for
a presentation is 12 minutes. No
credits, names or school names may
appear anywhere in the presentation. Be
sure to cite any prerecorded video or
audio (i.e., music, etc.) which is used.
Because of the nature of this contest,
group entries are permitted. There are
no grade divisions for this contest; all
entries are judged in one group. The
theme of the entry may be Roman history
or culture, mythology, relevance to
and/or promotion of Latin, Greek, JCL,
or the convention theme. Please have
your project set and ready to start when
put in the VCR. Please use a clean tape
for the project and begin the video at
the start of the tape.
