Academic Contests

There are six divisions for all contests: Levels 1/2, I, II, III, IV, and V+
. Each student must take tests on the level of Latin which has most recently been completed. Any student who has taken two Latin classes this year should have his Latin teacher enclose written verification of that with the student’s written contest registration form in the packet. The name on your written contest preference sheet should be the same as you used on your registration form.

This year, there will be unique procedure for academic contests. unlike previous years, testing will take place in individual testing rooms. At the time this was written, these are the rules, but please attend the academic testing orientation at convention for all details or changes. These testing rooms will be divided into Latin levels. Each room will have tests for that Latin level equivalent. Delegates may take one or more tests in each session, but are advised to take one test at a time. Please do not pre-register for tests you have no intention of taking. In each Contest Session no delegate will be admitted after the word to begin is given, and no delegate will be allowed to leave the testing area until that time.

All Academic Contests sessions are administered by either by a JCL sponsor or a member of the Senior Classical League. These tests are multiple choice, with anywhere from 40 to 75+ questions. The answers are to be placed onto the Scantron answer sheets only. DO NOT WRITE ON A TEST QUESTION SHEET. No delegate is to remove a test from the testing room, all Scantron answer sheets are to remain in the testing area as well.

A level 1/2 student is one enrolled in a program in which it takes two years to complete Latin I, and this student has completed only one year, at most, of that program. Any student who is registered for the second year of a 1/2 year program must take all academic tests on the first year level, and all other students should register on their appropriate level.

The sources listed in the Academic Contest Sources section are suggested sources and are not to be considered the definitive ones.

Tests offered during convention:

Reading Comprehension
Latin Grammar
Latin Vocabulary
Roman History
Roman Life
Mythology
Mottoes
Latin Derivatives
Classical Geography
Latin Literature

WA/BC JCL Testing Methods and Rules

Testing Supplies: Due to the nature of the testing session, pencils may not be available. All delegates who wish to take academic tests are advised to bring their own pencils and erasers to the session. A limited amount of emergency supplies may be available, but do not rely on that to exist during any of the sessions. No pens are to be used on the test, wood or solid colored rulers are not allowed, no calculators are needed and are also not allowed. We recommend that you do not carry bags or backpacks into the testing session. If you opt to carry a bag or backpack, you are not allowed to open it for any reason, and it must be stowed away when seated.

Questions during the session: During the session, if a delegate has any questions, they are to raise their hands and wait for a monitor to assist them. Test monitors are not allowed to answer any questions in respect to the content of the test. They can assist you with other problems (e.g. formatting, missing letters, etc...) as them come up. If a test monitor is unable to answer the question, the test administrator will be alerted and will answer it.

Academic Testing Questions Sheets: Delegate will be able to pick up to two (2) tests from the questions area each time they get tests, while it is recommended that they take one at a time. These tests are to be used for the testing period only. Do not write on tests, do not mark or destroy tests. Test are not to be removed from the test session. Tests are to be returned to the location at which they were removed from. Any delegate who takes a test from an academic testing session may have all of his/her tests voided, and will be reported to their sponsor for disciplinary action.

Scantron Test Sheets: Scantron multiple choice answer sheets are available for each test that the delegate takes. Scantron sheets are to be filled completely, including your Name, School, Latin level and what test you're taking.

Unnecessary Noise or Horseplay: If any delegate is creating noise to the effect that it affects those around them, they will be warned by a test monitor to cease their disruptive activities. After the repeated warnings, that person will be removed from the testing session at the monitor's discretion. If that delegate feels that they were unfairly removed, they may ask to protest to the test moderator, this MUST be done at the time they are asked to be removed. Once removed, you cannot protest.

Protests on test questions: If a delegate comes across a question that does not have an appropriate answer, we advise you to please complete as many questions on that test as possible, including the one you are protesting. Take the test to the test moderator and inform that person of the protest. They will take note of it and score according. All protests will be placed under consideration and the result of any decision will be reflected in the final score of all tests affected. All protests are kept in strict confidentially, and will not be released for the sake of fairness, including those filing the protest itself.

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices are not required for any test, and are considered banned from the testing session. Watches are allowed, exceptions include any with data storage compatibility or those that can transmit or receive data. Questions about permissible electronics or special needs devices are to be forwarded to the test administrator before the test.

Cheating: Cheating is prohibited. All delegates are expected to perform with the highest standards of honor and integrity, and not use anything that may unfairly affect the score of any test in anyway. Test monitors will watch all delegates, if they suspect any form of cheating, they can dismiss you from the contest with or without warning. If that delegate feels that they were unfairly removed, they may ask to protest to the test moderator directly, this MUST be done at the time they are being removed. Once removed, that person cannot protest. Any tests completed by someone caught cheating will considered void and will not be scored, they may also be reported to their sponsor for further disciplinary action.
